LEFKOSA - Resat Caglar, the New York representative of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), said that bi-zonality and continuation of 1960 guarantee treaties system were necessary for a fair and lasting agreement on the island.
Caglar stated that the Greek Cypriots should be willing for negotiations for a new partnership to reach the targeted goal.
The letter of Caglar in response to speeches of Greek Cypriot representatives in various U.N. committees was published as a U.N. document on Tuesday.
Caglar said in his letter that Greek Cypriot representatives distorted the rightful intervention Turkey made in the island in 1974 in line with 1960 guarantee agreements by defining it as ''attack'' and ''invasion.'' Referring to a statement Makarios issued on July 19, 1974, Caglar said that the Greek Cypriot leader had accused Greece, not Turkey of occupying the island.
Explaining the atrocities, ethnic cleansing and terrorism committed by Greek Cypriots against Turkish Cypriots between 1963-1974, Caglar said that the things done by Greek Cypriots were covered by The Washington Post dated on February 17, 1964 with the title of ''Greek Cypriot fanatics on the eve of genocide policy.'' Caglar stated that many high ranking American officials of that period also talked about in their statements the things done and wanted to be done by Greek Cypriots.
