EFFORTS UNDERWAY TO FIND PILOT AND WRECKAGE OF F-16 PLANE
No results could be obtained from the efforts to find pilot and wreckage of the F-16 plane which took off from Balikesir 9th Main Jet Base for training flight and which crashed in Kutahya province.
Search and Rescue teams gathered in Senlik village in Tavsanli township which the villagers claimed that they saw the pilot jumped with parachute.
Efforts continued till five early in the morning despite bad weather conditions.

GENERAL STAFF TO GIVE BRIEFING TO PRESS EVERY MONTH
Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug, who spoke at a press briefing on Friday, said they attached importance to giving accurate information to the public, stating that to this end press briefings would be periodical. Gen. Basbug said they planned another briefing in February.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he wanted the briefing that was given on January 14. Erdogan said the briefing was very beneficial, noting that such kind of works should continue.

LOIZIDOU MODEL FOR SOUTHEAST
The government will pay compensation to citizens who suffer losses due to measures taken to fight against terrorism and apply to European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) like Greek Cypriot citizen Loizidou. Some of citizens whose houses were demolished during days when Turkey countered terrorism are filing lawsuits in ECHR like Loizidou and demand compensation. Justice Ministry prepared a bill to meet this loss of citizens and sent it to the Prime Ministry. Those whose houses were demolished, burned, damaged and those who lost their animals and products in the last ten years will benefit from the law. The state will also meet losses of citizens stemming from death, injury, disablement, treatment and funeral costs. Those who want to benefit from the law should apply within one year.

IMF DEMANDS ADDITIONAL BUDGET
International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation demanded Turkey to pass an additional budget worth of 5.5 quadrillion Turkish liras (TL) due to the additional burden on the budget caused by lower primary surplus in 2003 and rises in pension and minimum age. IMF delegation calculated the additional burden caused by rises in pension and minimum wage as 2.9 quadrillion TL. Also, it is stated that primary surplus in 2003 was 2.5-3 quadrillion TL lower than expected. Therefore, IMF delegation insists on an additional budget of 5.5 quadrillion TL to achieve 6.5 percent growth rate in 2004.

FALCON WHO MAKES PEOPLE CRY
First Lieutenant Mehmet Kuzulu, the pilot of F-16 which crashed during a training flight and lost in heavy snowfall, was a brilliant pilot who had taken his master's degree in the United States. Mehmet Karakuzulu, the pilot of F-16 which crashed around Tavsanli town, is missing in Marmara Region, the most developed region of Turkey. Search and rescue teams can't reach the wreckage due to severe geographical conditions, snowfall and 70-meter snow for three days. Nobody knows what has happened to the pilot. Search and rescue teams found pieces of parachute which is thought to be used by the pilot on Kulluce hill in Domanic town. Therefore, search and rescue efforts are increased in this area. A woman from Elmali village said that she saw the pilot jumping out of the plane.

IMAR SURVIVORS SMILE FOR FIRST TIME IN SIX MONTHS
People who deposited their money to the closed Imar Bankasi started to get back their money as of Saturday morning. Around 200 thousand of 364 thousand people who deposited money in Imar Bankasi which was transferred to the Savings and Deposit Insurance Fund (SDIF) will have taken back their money by the end of this week.

SALEH: DON'T INTERVENE IN OUR DOMESTIC AFFAIRS
Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) representative Barham Saleh, while evaluating the warning of Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug, said they did not want to intervene in internal affairs of their neighbours and expected the neighbors to respect to their internal affairs.
Saleh said future of Iraq should be determined by Iraqi people.

TRNC PRIME MINISTER TALAT: ''TURKEY SHOULD SOLVE CYPRUS''
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat said Turkish Cypriots wanted a solution till May 2004, and that talks should start soon for this.
Talat said their target was solution, noting that the concessions which Turkey should make would be more serious in case Cyprus question can not be solved.

ANKARA KNEW ABOUT IRAQ WAR A YEAR AGO
U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney had told Ankara on March 19, 2002 that the United States would hit Iraq. A year later and on the same day, U.S. forces started to hit Baghdad. Iraq was not among issues to be taken up during the visit of Bulent Ecevit, the former Prime Minister, to the United States. Ecevit was due to meet U.S. President George Bush on January 16, 2002. Iraq was one of main issues during Ecevit's meeting with Bush and Cheney. Cheney had said that diplomacy was almost over. Cheney knew that Turkey did not want war and said that measures could be taken to eliminate Turkey's concerns. Cheney came to Ankara to get support on March 19. Cheney, who wanted to meet with Chief of General Staff Kivrikoglu, frankly said that Saddam would be toppled and the United States would do it alone if necessary. Situation became clear with messages coming one after the other. And, the United States hit Baghdad on March 19, 2003.

Saleh said that they did not want to intervene in internal affairs of their neighbors and expected their neighbors to act the same. Saleh said that Iraqi people would determine Iraq's future, adding that Iraqi people would found a federal state.

ERDOGAN AIMS TO START A NEW PERIOD WITH SAUDI ARABIA
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan went to Saudi Arabia to join Jeddah Economic Forum. Erdogan is accompanied by 270 businessmen.
Erdogan said customs problems between Turkey and Saudi Arabia would be solved, and that they targeted to double current 1.5 billion U.S. dollars trade volume.

BAKU-CEYHAN TO BE IN JANUARY 2005
Azerbaijan's Consul General Yaguov said relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan would be warmer in the period of Ilham Aliyev.
Stating that Baku-Ceyhan was very important not only for the two countries but for the whole world, Yaguov said, ''we will give the oil from Baku on January 1, 2005. It will be in Ceyhan in March. Around 70 percent of the line is completed.''

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said the image that prevailed throughout world public that ''Turks don't want solution in Cyprus'' began to disappear in the past one month.
Stating that the whole world saw that Turkey put forth a new political will in Cyprus, Gul said, ''all the world accused Turkey, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and TRNC President Rauf Denktas so far. Such an image was created. However, this image was destroyed in the past one month. Those who want insolubility will be revealed soon.''

GEN. TOLON: THERE ARE TRAITORS WHO SAY ''LET US GIVE CYPRUS AND GET RID OF''
Aegean Army Commander Gen. Hursit Tolon said there were some people who adopted ''give and get rid of'' approach.
Speaking about the developments in Cyprus issue, Gen. Tolon said, ''some people say, 'what will happen if we give Cyprus and get rid of. How could we forget the injustices, and the women and babies that experienced the atrocities?''
