ISTANBUL - "Nevruz is a day that symbolizes amity and brotherhood of Turks; their consciousness of living together and their hope for the future" said Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler on Wednesday.
Guler hosted representatives of Turkic foundations and institutions at his office. Representatives from Turkic republics, Syria, Iraq and Iran were among the guests of governor Guler on Nevruz day. Following his talks in his office, Guler walked to Sultanahmet Square accompanied with Janissary band of musicians.
Governor Guler delivered a speech at the Sultanahmet square where he said "Nevruz is a day that symbolizes amity and brotherhood of Turks; their consciousness of living together and their hope for the future."
Nevruz symbolizes solidarity and unity, forgiveness, love, brotherhood and tolerance said Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Kadir Topbas who was also present at the celebration ceremony in Sultanahmet Square.
"Today either Nevruz is not well known or is misinterpreted by some. Nevruz means living together in solidarity and peace as well as, the revival of nature and arrival of spring. Societies can survive as far as they protect their unity and solidarity. We must perpetuate the customs that constitute us. Nevruz is one of our values that must be jointly celebrated" said Topbas.
Following their speeches, Guler, Topbas and other representatives from various state institutions participated in Nevruz celebrations such as jumping over the Nevruz fire, forging iron and tossing eggs.
