LEFKOSA - Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (COEPA) Political Affairs Committee's Cyprus Rapporteur Matyas Eorsi said on Wednesday that his contacts in TRNC were very positive.
''I am impressed, there is a new and fresh wind in this country, the new draft report which I will prepare will cover positive elements,'' he said.
Speaking at the end of his contacts, Eorsi said that he was optimistic about starting of the negotiations between the leaders of two communities. Noting that the negotiations should start soon on the basis of Annan plan, Eorsi said that the thing that mattered was to carry out the negotiations with good will and to focus on solution. If this was the case, a united Cyprus could join the EU on May 1, 2004, he said.
Eorsi said that he both met with state officials and also representatives of NGOs in TRNC, adding that his contacts were useful. He commented that he witnessed more sincerity and openness about solution of Cyprus issue this time when compared to his earlier visits to the island.
Hungarian parliamentarian Eorsi will meet with Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul in Ankara on Monday.
