LEFKOSA - Fatma Ekenoglu, a deputy of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), was elected on Wednesday new Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Parliament Speaker.
A woman will act as parliament speaker for the first time in political history of the TRNC.
Ekenoglu was the only candidate in election of parliament speaker.
She won votes of 32 out of 50 deputies.
National Unity Party's 18 deputies cast their votes against her.
Ekenoglu was born in Baf Altincik in 1956. She graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine. Ekenoglu has been serving as deputy since 1998. She is married with two children.
