STRASBOURG - European anti-torture watchdog has opted not to send a team of experts to investigate into the health condition of the imprisoned head of the terrorist organization PKK, after recent allegations that Abdullah Ocalan was poisoned at an island prison, sources said Monday.
European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) discussed the issue during a meeting last week but saw no need to send a delegation of independent experts to Imrali, where Ocalan serves his life-time sentence as the sole inmate of the island.
Lawyers of the terrorist head recently claimed in Italy that Ocalan`s hair samples showed signs of poisoning.
Turkish government immediately denied the allegations and ordered a team of Turkish medical experts to run tests.
Turkish forensic authorities announced Monday that Ocalan`s hair, urine and skin samples tested negative for any kind of poisoning with a prosecutor calling the allegations as "completely baseless."
