Turkey Signs Protocol Of European Convention On Human Rights About Annulment Of Death Penalty In Warfare

STRASBOURG - Turkey signed on Friday the Protocol 13 of the European Convention on Human Rights about annulment of death penalty in times or war and at times of danger of war.
Turkey's Permanent Representative to Council of Europe Numan Hazar signed the protocol on behalf of Turkey at a ceremony that was held in Strasbourg.
Turkey had signed 6th protocol of European Convention on Human Rights envisaging abolishment of death penalty at times of peace on January 15, 2003 and officially approved it on December 12.
Turkey was one of the countries among Council of Europe member countries which signed the 6th protocol late. This had been a problem for a long time between Ankara and Strasbourg.
Turkey was among Council of Europe member countries which did not sign the 13th protocol.
Council of Europe opened the 13th protocol to signature of member countries on May 3, 2002.
Council of Europe, which attributes importance to making Europe a region purified from death sentence, also launch initiatives to abolish death sentence in the United States and Japan which participate in their activities in observer status.
