CAIRO - Foreign Minister and Deputy Premier Abdullah Gul, who is currently in the Egyptian capital of Cairo, said that being invited to the Arab League meeting was a great honour for him.
Replying to the questions of an Egyptian TV, Gul noted that he would deliver a speech on the common problems of the region during the opening session of the Arab League Foreign Ministers` meeting.
Stressing that he frequently held talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Ali Aboul Gheit, Gul said they desired to boost relations between Turkey and Egypt.
Gul stressed that, thanks to the free trade agreement signed with Egypt, economic relations between the two countries would be improved as well.
Upon a question on the fight against terrorism, Gul emphasized that an intense cooperation was needed on the issue, underscoring that terrorism should be fought jointly, whatever its motive was.
Replying to a question on what Turkey`s position would be in case of a conflict between the countries of the Middle East, Gul indicated Turkey was a country which tried to solve the problems in the region in a peaceful way and emphasized that war was the last alternative.
Gul, who will meet foreign ministers of the Arab League Iraq Committee at breakfast today, will then participate in the foreign ministers` meeting as an observer.
After proceeding to Sharm El Sheikh where he will meet Egyptian President Mohammad Hosni Mubarak later in the day, FM Gul is scheduled to return to Turkey in the afternoon.
