AH- Gunter Verheugen, European Union Commissioner Responsible For Enlargement, told to German Focus Magazine that all the presidents and heads of the government said in 1999 “Turkey might be a member of EU but we do not want this”.
Verheugen said that most presidents of EU countries wanted membership of Turkey today due to the matters about foreign policy and security and added that this process has started on September 11, 2001.
Stating that there were different choices between “a definite Yes” and “an unconditional No” whether developments in Turkey were sufficient or not about the EU membership of Turkey Verheugen said that the political desire of the member countries would determine the EU membership of Turkey.
