ANKARA - Turkey imported a total of 141,000 tons of wheat in the last 22 months from 6 countries among which are Russia and the USA.
Answering a question by Justice and Development Party deputy Turhan Comez, Agriculture and Rural Affairs Minister Mehdi Eker said that they were taking measures to reduce the imports of wheat, rice, beans, lentil, and sunflower and reduce costs.
Eker said that in this perspective the agricultural and energy debts of the farmers were restructured and aid in the form of direct income, fuel, seeds and chemical fertilizers supplied to farmers.
According to Eker, in 2006 imports of rice dropped to 73,740 (from 111,210 tons in 2005) and imports of sunflower to 292,949 (from 492,334 tons in 2005).
