LEFKOSA - The 50 new members of the TRNC parliament who were elected after Dec. 14 elections took oath in a ceremony on Friday.
TRNC President Rauf Denktas, Supreme Court Chairman Taner Erginel and Chief Prosecutor Akýn Sait attended the oath-taking ceremony in the parliament which was chaired by Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu as the oldest member of the parliament.
Denktas told reporters that it was not possible for him to designate somebody to form the government before Monday.
Noting that he met with party leaders before the oath-taking ceremony, Denktas said that ''meetings continue, there will be no other meeting today. When they are ready, they will meet with me.''
Denktas stated that 50 deputies took oath to protect the independence of the state, adding that ''I hope our state will live forever and constitute the basis of peace.''
Totally seven political parties competed in the elections held on December 14, Sunday and four parties were able to join the parliament. In TRNC parliament, there are 19 deputies of Republican Turkish Party (CTP), 18 deputies of National Unity Party (UBP), 7 deputies of Democrat Party (DP), and 6 deputies of Peace and Democracy Movement (BDH).
The next meeting of the TRNC parliament is on January 2.
