LEFKOSA - TRNC President Rauf Denktas said on Thursday that he favoured a broad-based government among political parties which tried to form a government, adding that it was not wise to go for new elections.
Speaking during a meeting, Denktas said that he and Turkey favoured formation of a broad-base government in TRNC.
Denktas stated that people had to leave the election atmosphere behind as soon as possible, adding that ''it is not wise to go for new elections. Election will cause tension among people and the work of the state will slow down. I hope it won't be necessary.''
Denktas commented that various formulas were presented to end the state, adding that ''don't be sad as I am under pressure. In fact the one who is under pressure is the people.''
Denktas stated that a broad-base government could be easily set up if the state was taken as the basis. Noting that the elections showed that people wanted compromise in a way that would protect their rights, and they gave the message that they didn't give up the state and guarantee of the motherland, Denktas stated that early election was unnecessary and a big trouble.
Denktas stated that meetings were held in Turkey about the Cyprus issue, adding that the results of the meeting would be assessed.
Denktas noted that he would designate somebody to form the government after the deputies take oath in the parliament and after political party leaders complete their contacts among them.
