ANKARA - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has said that statement of United Nations Security Council Term President Stefan Tafrov of Bulgaria dated December 18 about the Cyprus question included some unilateral comments and some unreal allegations, adding, ''the statement is far away from contributing to solution efforts of reaching a comprehensive compromise in Cyprus through dialogue.''
Releasing a statement on Tuesday, the MFA said, ''the parliamentary elections were held in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on December 14, 2003, in an atmosphere of freedom and transparency. Both ruling and opposition parties have respected results of the elections, and the process of formation of the new government has begun. This attempt to overshadow this process has constituted an unfortunate development.''
''On the other hand, the statement contradicts with the content and the frame of the resolutions no: 1250 and no: 1475 adopted by the United Nations Security Council in an effort to support the negotiation process in the island. As it is a well-known fact, the good-will mission of United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan is based on encouraging the sides to hold negotiations to reach a lasting compromise on the basis of the equality of the sides. In this regard, the duty of the United Nations Security Council is to support this process. However, this statement ignoring the principle of equality and the basic philosophy of the negotiation process, has the characteristics of an inappropriate intervention trying to protect the Greek Cypriot side,'' it said.
The MFA added, ''both Turkey and TRNC want and target to find a solution to the Cyprus question. The Turkish side continues to support the good-will mission of United Nations Secretary General Annan, and expects all relevant sides, especially the Security Council, to act in line with requirements of the current sensitive process.''
