ANKARA - Health Board of Ankara Numune Hospital decided on Tuesday that it would be appropriate to postpone execution of imprisonment sentence given to Felicity Party (SP) leader Necmettin Erbakan for one year since Erbakan's illnesses were vital.
Ankara Numune Hospital's Deputy Chief Doctor Faruk Cetin told reporters that Ankara Prosecutor's Office sent a letter to the hospital on December 22, 2003 in which it asked if execution of Erbakan's imprisonment sentence would be postponed under the Article 399 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CMUK).
Cetin said that Erbakan underwent check-ups of neurologists, cardiologists and orthopedists.
''Doctors saw that Erbakan suffered from health problems like cerebrovascular disease and cerebral infarction, hypertension, hypertensive hearth disease, mild aorta insufficiency, problems in kidney functions, kidney insufficiency, lumbar scoliosis, problems and fractures in backbone, and pains in legs and difficulty in walking,'' Cetin said.
Cetin added, ''the board thinks that these diseases are vital and decides that it will be appropriate to postpone execution of Erbakan's sentence for one year.''
Supreme Court of Appeals Criminal Department unanimously ratified on December 2, 2003 two years and four months of imprisonment given to Necmettin Erbakan, the leader of the banned Welfare Party (RP), on charges of ''forgery in documents'' in the case publicly known as ''lost trillion case''.
The Supreme Court of Appeals Criminal Department concluded its examination on the sentences given by Ankara Heavy Criminal Court.
The Department unanimously ratified imprisonment term given to Erbakan under Article 345 of Turkish Penal Code saying that it was in compliance with procedures and laws.
Erbakan's lawyer applied to Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Prosecutor's Office on December 3, 2003 for correction of the decision.
