GAZIANTEP - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Center Deputy Director Minja Yang came on Saturday to southeast Gaziantep province to visit Zeugma ancient city.
Yang was informed about the activities that had been carried on in Zeugma in a meeting held by Gaziantep Great City Municipality. Stressing that UNESCO attributed importance to the relation between water and civilization, Yang said that they were closely following the effects of dams and other investments on archeological values and cultural heritage.
Noting that UNESCO was an international institution but it was not distributing money to countries, Yang said that projects for economic and social development should be prepared by considering their contribution to archeological values.
UNESCO permanent representative in Turkey Bozkurt Aran said that the visit of Yang was very significant for the future of Zeugma.
Noting that Yang could have contributions to activities to be made in Zeugma with her experiences, Aran said that UNESCO had experience in activities carried on places like Zeugma, adding that it would be right to benefit from those experiences in activities in Zeugma.
