LEFKOSA - President Rauf Denktas of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has said, ''both Europe and the United States have extended support to the opposition in the elections. Our people should think about it carefully.''
President Denktas visited the National Unity Party (UBP) and the Democrat Party (DP) on the eve of Sunday's elections.
Speaking at the visits, President Denktas said, ''public surveys have revealed that those who are in favor of our state, would win the elections. Let's hope for the best.''
''Long-standing political rule may cause some complaints. However, we will overcome all of them following the elections,'' he said.
Referring to the plan of United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, President Denktas said, ''raising objections to the plan does not mean that we would never meet with them. This plan is the fourth plan of United Nations Secretary General Annan. The Greek Cypriot side rejected first three plans. But, nobody has put pressure on the Greek Cypriot side. Both Europe and the United States have extended support to the opposition in the elections. Our people should think about it carefully. They have turned the elections into a matter of carrying out an indirect annexation through the European Union (EU). We can enter the EU after our status is determined. A nation without its identity and sovereignty, is nothing but a minority in a Greek Cypriot republic. The opposition has turned the elections into a referendum on joining the EU with the Annan plan.''
