ANKARA - Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi met Turkish main opposition Republican People`s Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal at Ankara Sheraton Hotel on Monday.
Baykal told reporters that they focused on Turkey`s relations with the EU during the meeting.
"We, as CHP delegation, underlined the difficulties, problems as well as negativities emanating from the EU in Turkey`s relations with the Union. We explained the search of a new beginning in this issue," noted Baykal.
"Italian PM Prodi expressed hope that the difficulties will be overcome with determination," added Baykal.
Baykal said that it is important that Italy clearly shows its positive and constructive stance regarding Turkey`s EU membership, and he welcomed statements of Prodi about the issue.
