ANKARA - The Cyprus issue was high on agenda of the meeting between Turkish Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Commission Chairman Mehmet Dulger and members of the British Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Commission.
During the meeting, Fabian Hamilton from the British delegation said that they expected a gesture from Turkey in an attempt to resolve the Cyprus issue.
She said that Turkey might withdraw some of its soldiers from the island.
However, Dulger reacted to the British MPs saying, "Turkey has displayed the necessary gesture during the referendum on United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan`s plan, but could not get anything in return. Instead, you awarded the Greek Cypriots with the EU membership. Why do you want us to take unilateral steps? Did you propose the same thing to the Greek Cypriot administration?"
"It was not Turkey which created the dispute on the island. Actually, the Cyprus issue should be resolved under the roof of the United Nations not of the EU," he added.
