ISTANBUL - TRNC President Rauf Denktas said on Monday that EU Commissioner for Enlargement Guenter Verheugen launched great efforts to make the application of the Greek Cypriot side to the EU be accepted and he assured the EU saying that ''Turks would definitely follow Greek Cypriots.''
''Now he sees that he is mistaken, and he can issue nonsense statements as he feels that he has a great responsibility,'' said Denktas speaking to reporters.
When a journalist reminded the words of Verheugen about TRNC, Denktas said that ''I had earlier explained what the unbelievable, unethical and undiplomatic words of Verheugen meant. They spent too much money and launched too much efforts thinking that the other side would win. They did everything to eliminate me. When they saw that this would not happen, they were upset. Verheugen played a great role to make the application of a divided Cyprus to EU be accepted as if the application was that of the whole Cyprus.''
When reminded about the views saying that Georgian model could be witnessed after the elections in TRNC, Denktas said that ''we also hear that. Reporters asked a question to a party leader and he gave an unbelievable response saying 'if we lose, and if there is suspicion about elections, we will hold demonstrations.' Georgian model can't be valid for Cyprus. Whatever they do they will give harm to themselves, but to nobody else. Those who get the support of foreigners on national causes, always lose. You can only get the support of people in national causes. A national cause can only be successful by national conscience, national thought and national sacrifices.''
