KOMOTINI - Theologist Ahmet Mete was elected as the new mufti of Xanthi today.
Mete will replace Xanthi's elected mufti Mehmet Emin Aga who died on September 9th, 2006.
Ahmet Mete was elected with 5,137 votes while 4,420 people living in Western Thrace supported Ahmet Hraloglu.
"We expect the Athens government to respect this will of the Turkish minority, and find a lasting solution to the ongoing mufti problem," said Ibrahim Serif, the elected mufti of Komotini and the head of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority Solidarity Board.
Mete was born in Yassioren village in Xanthi in 1965, and had his elementary education in Istanbul, Turkey.
After graduating from Uludag University's Faculty of Theology in Turkey, he continued his education in Medina Islam University in Saudi Arabia.
Then he returned to Western Thrace, and worked in the Xanti Mufti's Office.
