BAGHDAD - Insurgents killed a US soldier in a bomb attack in Baghdad, taking US fatalities in Iraq in December to 108, the highest monthly toll in more than two years, the US military said Sunday.
The soldier was killed Saturday as his unit was conducting a security patrol in a neighbourhood in the Iraqi capital. Two other soldiers were wounded by the roadside blast.
The death took total US military fatalities in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion to 2,991, according to an AFP count based on Pentagon figures.
The previous highest monthly death toll for US soldiers this year came in October, when the Ramadan holy month saw a spike in violence which left 106 US soldiers dead.
Prior to that, the worst month for US combat deaths was November 2004, when the battle of Fallujah helped push the country-wide toll to 137.
