ANKARA - "Saddam knew what would happen to him," Turkish State Minister Kursad Tuzmen said on Saturday while assessing the execution of ousted leader Saddam Hussein of Iraq.
In an exclusive interview with the A.A. correspondent, Tuzmen said, who was the last statesman that met Saddam, said "I met Saddam Hussein in January 2003. We have discussed all matters."
"He told me that there was not chemical weapons in Iraq and that USA knew this," Tuzmen said and noted that Saddam told him that 'USA will hit Iraq whatever I do'.
"Saddam's execution will escalate chaos in the region. Saddam was a leader that affected history in the Middle East geography. It seems that he will continue to affect after his death," Tuzmen said.
Stating that problems will emerge in the region after Saddam's execution, Tuzmen said, "a new Lebanon comes on the scene in Iraq. I mean a troublesome region was formed near our borders. We should do everything to overcome this situation as soon as possible."
