CHICAGO - Former National Basketball Association superstar Michael Jordan and his wife, Juanita, filed for divorce on Friday after 17 years of marriage.
In a statement issued through their lawyers, the Jordans called the split "mutual and amicable".
The Chicago Tribune reported the couple filed for divorce in the Lake County courthouse on Friday.
According to the document filed, the pair have not lived together since February, and are seeking joint custody of their three children who are aged 18, 16 and 14.
In his stellar playing career, Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA titles.
He was a five-time regular season Most Valuable Player and a six-time MVP of the NBA finals. He won 10 NBA scoring titles and two Olympic gold medals.
He retired in 1993 to play baseball but returned to basketball in 1995, finishing his career with 32,292 points (third place in scoring) and a career average of 30.12 ppg -- the best in NBA history.
His second retirement came in 1999, after which he took on the role of president of the Washington Wizards, with whom he returned to the court for two seasons in 2001.
In June Jordan became a part-owner of the Charlotte Bobcats.
