ANKARA - "We attach importance to a peaceful transition process in Turkmenistan," Foreign Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said on Saturday.
Gul left for Turkmenistan to attend the funeral for President Saparmurat Turkmenbasi tomorrow.
Holding a news conference at Ankara`s Esenboga Airport prior to his departure, Gul said, "Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and I will be in attendance at the funeral to commiserate with Turkmen people."
"There have been special relations between Turkey and Turkmenistan. We attach great importance to our friendly relations, historical and cultural ties with Turkmenistan. We wish that the new Tukmen administration will create the necessary political, economic and social conditions for Turkmen people," Gul added.
President Turkmenbasi died of a sudden heart failure on Thursday at the age of 66 after more than two decades in power. His funeral is to be held Sunday in his hometown of Kipchak.
