BRUSSELS - "There are still people who want to discuss Turkey's status as an EU candidate country. Turkey is already a candidate country," said European Parliament (EP) President Josep Borrell.
Holding a press conference in Brussels, Borrell indicated, "it (Turkey) will not become a member tomorrow, but it will be an EU member maybe in ten years. So, every discussion should be made on time."
Borrell, who will not join the upcoming EU summits since his term in mission is over, recalled that the EU had to suspend negotiations with Turkey on some chapters as Turkey did not open its ports and airports to the Greek Cypriot traffic, and regretted that the isolation of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has not been ended yet.
Josep Borrell asked Germany, which will take over the rotating presidency of the EU as of the beginning of 2007, to work for implementation of the direct trade regulation for TRNC.
