ANKARA - University of Padova, one of the oldest universities of Italy and the world, conferred honorary doctorate on Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, it was reported on Wednesday.
It was emphasized that this was the first time the honorary doctorate was conferred on a Turkish scientist.
Vicenzo Milanezi, the Rector of the University, presented the award to OIC SG Ihsanoglu in Italy, according to an OIC statement.
Taking the floor at the ceremony, Ihsanoglu said the award was meaningful at a time when efforts were underway to impose the idea of clash of civilizations on societies.
Ihsanoglu said insufficient information get by some groups in Western hemisphere regarding other religions and cultures led to misunderstandings. "The solution lies under revealing joint roots of civilizations in order to respond to those who aim at spreading enmity seeds" he said.
Ihsanoglu was earlier given the honorary doctorate 8 times due to his contribution to rapprochement among civilizations.
