ANKARA - The health of a Turkish diplomat, who was injured in a Moscow stabbing last weekend, is in good condition, Foreign Ministry spokesman Namik Tan told a weekly press conference on Wednesday.
Tan said that the assault on Anil Cicek, an undersecretary at the Turkish Embassy in Moscow, was not politically motivated and that Cicek`s medical treatment was still continuing.
Russian news agency RIA-Novosti reported on Sunday that Cicek was stabbed in downtown Moscow late at night after a brief quarrel with a Russian couple over a purse Cicek`s friend had lost at a restaurant.
Novosti said that Cicek and his friend saw the couple, one of whom was carrying a similar purse, and followed them out of the restaurant.
Cicek stopped the couple after a brief pursuit but realized that the handbag did not belong to his friend. The Russian guy, who was mad at Turkish diplomat`s behaviour, stabbed Cicek and injured him, Novosti reported.
Cicek was rushed to hospital and underwent a surgical operation.
