ANKARA - Turkey plays a leading role in countering hunger, said John M. Powell, the Deputy Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP).
In an article published in November edition of the "International Economic Problems" magazine of the Turkish MFA, Powell emphasized that Turkey is one of the countries which is extending the largest support to WFP.
Powell noted that Turkey was one of the countries receiving assistance from the WFP ten years ago, however it has become one of the countries providing the highest resources to the programme, today.
This reflects the striking progress Turkey has made in child health, education and nutrition, he stated and deemed it as a good example for the whole world.
Powell added that Turkey extends humanitarian aid during disasters to not only its neighbors but also to all other countries, irrespective of their geographical location.
About 4.4 million USD of humanitarian aid was extended to many countries, particulary poor African countries, via WFP between January 2004 and August 2006.
