Unesco Seeks Places In Gap To Be Restored

SANLIURFA - UNESCO officials are seeking historical and touristic places in provinces of Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) to be restored with finance of the European Union (EU).
Five-member delegation headed by Francis Childe, Chief of Operations Section for Asia/Pacific and Europe of UNESCO's Division of Cultural Heritage, and Laurent Levi-Strauss, deputy director of UNESCO's Division of Cultural Heritage, visited historical places of southeastern province of Sanliurfa.
Levi-Strauss said that the EU provided 12 million Euro of finance to restore cultural places and to improve economy of people in the region and stated that 50 projects which would be elected among projects that would be developed by non-govermental organizations (NGOs) and the concerned people would be put into practice with finance of the EU.
Levi-Strauss said that they were visiting provinces under the GAP and stated that they also had chance to visit historical places of Diyarbakir and Mardin provinces.
Officials said that UNESCO delegation would visit Harran, Birecik and Halfeti towns and Adiyaman province and added that the delegation would leave the region later.
