ISTANBUL - TRNC President Rauf Denktas said on Wednesday that Greek Cypriots confronted Turkish Cypriots not with weapons, but with EU this time.
Speaking in a meeting on Cyprus, Denktas said that Greece and the Greek Cypriot side would implement by Annan Plan the decision taken by Greek Cypriot National Council in 1989 and that decision foresaw one state and one sovereignty on the island.
Stressing that Turkey's guarantor rights on Cyprus would end by implementation of Annan plan, Denktas said that TRNC opened doors to Greek Cypriots last April. Hundred thousands of Greek Cypriots who came to TRNC saw that the things told to them for years were not true.
Denktas said that Greek Cypriot people were told that TRNC economy collapsed and that people lived in shanties, adding that ''when they saw that TRNC economy didn't collapse, Greek Cypriots who have common sense, said they understood why Denktas didn't accept Annan plan.''
Denktas pointed out that those who wanted two states, two democracies and Turkey's guarantor rights to continue on the island would compete with those who defended the contrary in the elections on Dec. 14, adding that they would be the side who would win.
Criticizing opposition Republican Turkish Party leader Mehmet Ali Talat, Denktas said that Talat issued statements telling that 'Turkey could be the motherland of some reactionists, but it is not my motherland' and added that ''these persons are members of the parliament and they call that parliament as illegitimate. Then what are you doing in that parliament?''
Denktas also criticized European Parliament which listened to representatives of opposition parties of TRNC the same day.
