New York - Sudan has agreed in principle to allow UN peacekeepers into the war-torn Darfur region, a UN spokesman told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa Saturday.
The size of the UN contingent and who would command it had not yet been agreed, Stephane Dujarric said. The UN was still waiting on a decision from Khartoum on those two issues, he said.
Dujarric said Khartoum gave the go-ahead during a meeting with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the general secretary of the African Union, Alpha Oumar Konare, during a crisis meeting in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
The AU currently has 7,000 troops stationed in Darfur.
