Moscow - A rival of Chechen Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov who was wanted in his homeland on dozens of charges of murder and kidnapping was killed Saturday during a shootout with Moscow police on a street in the Russian capital, news agency Interfax reported.
Police sources told Interfax that Movladi Baisarov, the former commander of a special unit of the Chechen secret service which was loyal to the Kremlin, had strenuously resisted arrest and attempted to throw a hand grenade at a police officier.
No official confirmation of the report was immediately available.
Baisarov was the bodyguard of former Chechen president Akhmad Kadyrov, who was assassinated in May 2004. Media reports however said he had refused loyalty to the private army of Ramzan Kadyrov, son of Akhmad.
