Montevideo (dpa) - A Uruguayan judge ordered the arrest of former president Juan Bordaberry and his former foreign minister Juan Carlos Blanco for their role in the murder of four political opponents in 1976, the Supreme Court said on Thursday.
The two are accused of kidnapping and assassinating legislators Zelmar Michelini and Hector Gutierrez Ruiz and two Tupamaro guerrilla movement members in Buenos Aires in neighbouring Argentina.
Bordaberry, 78, was elected president in 1972 but dissolved Congress and with authoritarian measures ruled until 1976 when he was pushed out of power by the military. The military regime stayed in power until 1985.
Previously amnesty laws prevented crimes during the dictatorship from being brought to court.
