New York (dpa) - The UN Security Council on Thursday expressed "deep regret" over the deaths of two Jordanian soldiers who served in the UN peacekeeping operations in Haiti and extended condolences to their families.
The two soldiers were killed last week during a patrol that was attacked by armed people in the Cite Soleil slum, one of the most dangerous parts of Puerto Príncipe.
The 15-nation council discussed the situation in Haiti where the UN force of more than 6,000 military troops has been trying to maintain order and provide security so the government can hold local and municipal elections in early December.
The council said in a statement that it is determined to "continue to closely follow the situation in Haiti in order to work cooperatively with the government to consolidate a stable environment that enables progress and development."
