Mexico City - Mexico`s football idol Hugo Sánchez, 48, Thursday stepped up as the new head coach for Mexico`s national team, Mexican broadcaster Azteka reported.
Owners of the top league clubs voted on the appointment.
Sánchez, known as the stormer of Real Madrid, will begin the new job in January. He currently is coach for the Necaxa club in Aguascalientes.
The national post was vacated by Argentinian Ricardo La Volpe, whose contract was not renewed after the team`s defeat at the World Cup in Germany in June.
The national team also approached German coach Jürgen Klinsmann and Italian Marcello Lippi. At the end, the only other likely candidate remaining was Argentinian America Gallego, who trained the top league club Tuluca.
