PRESIDENT SEZER DIDN'T SEND MESSAGE
TO NATIONAL EDUCATION COUNCIL
Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer protested the 17th National Education Council which began yesterday in Ankara. President Sezer did not send a message to the National Education Council which convened for the first time after seven years. National Education Minister Huseyin Celik defended some proposals like addition of Koran lessons to school curricula as electives.

NO VIOLENCE ORIGINATING IN FAMILY
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's wife Emine Erdogan attended a conference held within the scope of a campaign "No Violence Originating in Family". Emine Erdogan said, "lack of education is the most important reason of violence."

EXPOSURE PUNISHMENT TO ALCOHOL AT STREET
Justice & Development Party (AKP)-led Uskudar Municipality is punishing people with a fine if they drink alcoholic beverages in parks and forested and coastal areas, and also exposing their photos at Municipality's official web-site. According to lawyers, it is against laws.

EU SUPPORTS 'SOFT ATTITUDE'
During EU's foreign ministerial summit, participants discussed the method which will be pursued in case Turkey does not open its ports and airports to Greek Cypriot vessels and planes. None of the countries suggested complete suspension of membership negotiations with Turkey. Most of the ministers talked about 'partial suspension'. Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik said that an agreement can be signed with Turkey to ease the tension.

AN OXFORD RISES FROM SANLIURFA
Harran University in Turkish southeastern city of Sanliurfa is ranked the sixth among 78 universities of Turkey with its majority of scientific publications. 225 studies of 229 lecturers of Harran University were issued in international publications last year.

WEARING HEADSCARF SHOULD BE WITH FREE WILL
Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami who arrived in Istanbul to attend the summit of Alliance of Civilizations Initiative spoke to Sabah and said that there is a religious administration in Iran and headscarf is associated with laws. He added that even people who don't want to wear headscarf have to obey the laws, however it should be left to free will of people. Khatami also said that Turkey's accession to the EU and its development are for the interest of Iran.

PEACE MANIFEST
A summit of the Alliance of Civilizations Initiative co-sponsored by Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Spanish PM Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was held in Ciragan Palace in Istanbul. Three significant messages came out from the summit. The first one was to the world that Israel-Palestine conflict should be solved immediately, the second was to the West that military operations escalate fear and hostility and the last one was to the East that provocative statements of religious leaders cause tension.

PRIMARY SURPLUS TARGET ACHIEVED
Finance Ministry said that annual primary surplus target in the budget was reached at the end of October. The ministry noted that primary surplus which was 30.9 billion YTL between January and October 2005 rose 19.9 percent to 37 billion YTL in the same period of 2006.

LET'S MARCH TOGETHER
Democratic Left Party (DSP) leader Zeki Sezer said that tens of thousands of people who chanted slogans that "Cankaya (Presidential Palace) is secular and will remain secular" during the funeral of former prime minister Bulent Ecevit don't want to see PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan as the president. Sezer said, "if Erdogan announces his candidacy, DSP and CHP (the main opposition Republican People's Party) shall march together towards Kizilay square (to protest his candidacy)."

OCCUPATION FEEDS PKK
Howard Dean, who achieved a victory in the congress elections in the USA, said that terrorist organization PKK problem in the north of Iraq was caused by occupation of this country.

Final report of Alliance of Civilizations Initiative challenges clash of civilizations thesis. According to the report, the source of clash between western and Muslim countries is political, not religious or cultural.

TURKEY GETS OUT OF PATIENCE WITH NEWS FROM ERUH
Government, which was trying to have the U.S. and Iraqi administrations take action, got out of patience with the news of killing of 8 soldiers in Eruh town of southeastern city of Siirt on July 15th. Two days after this date, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave directions to former Chief of General Staff Gen. Hilmi Ozkok for a cross-border military operation in north of Iraq.

INVITATION TO PEACE
A report was released during the 4th High-Level Group Meeting of Alliance of Civilizations Initiative at Istanbul's Ciragan Palace. The report included significant messages regarding settlement of peace to the Islam world and the West. It said, "peoples who feel that they face persistent discrimination, humiliation or marginalization are reacting by asserting their identity more aggressively. Nowhere is this dynamic more prevalent than in relations between Western and Muslim societies. Neither ancient history nor religious differences are responsible for present tensions between Western and Muslim populations."

CELIK ON COMPULSORY EDUCATION
Turkish Minister of National Education Huseyin Celik, who delivered a speech in 17th National Education Council in Ankara, said that Turkey now was carrying out activities for a 12-year compulsory education system. He stressed that the 21st century would belong to the Turks, if Turkey's young population was well-educated.

ANNAN: REASON OF TENSION IN WORLD IS NOT RELIGION
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said that the basic reason of tension between western and Islamic societies is politics, not religion. He said that the reason is neither Koran nor Torah nor Bible, adding that they should start taking action to prove it.

U.S. SENATOR: PKK PROBLEM STEMS FROM IRAQ'S OCCUPATION
Howard Dean, a leading name of Democrats who won Congress elections in the United States, said that terrorist organization PKK problem stems from occupation of Iraq. Dean said that U.S. President George W. Bush does not take Turkey's stability into consideration.

A public survey was conducted by ANAR showed that 54.1 percent of Turkish people want to join the European Union (EU) while 37.1 percent don't want Turkey to become a full member of the EU. The survey also showed that there is a pessimism about whether the EU wants Turkey or not.

PALESTINE KEY OF PEACE
Leaders gave a message in the meeting of the Alliance of Civilizations Initiative held in Istanbul yesterday that Palestine issue should be solved urgently in regard to settlement of peace.
