BRUSSELS - "Today, we gave a chance to diplomacy in resolving the Cyprus issue," said Jose Manuel Barroso, European Commission President, after the EU Commission made public its Progress Report on Turkey, today.
"Europe needs a Turkey that is stable, democratic and that improves the welfare of its people, that lives in peace with its neighbors and that embraces European values. It is for this reason that we began entry negotiations with Turkey. Turkey must continue its reform process and fulfill its obligations," told Barroso.
He added that "the EU gave a chance to diplomacy on Cyprus with its report made public today. Turkey must fulfill its obligations under the Ankara Protocol. If Turkey does not fulfill its obligations, the EU Commission will make the necessary advices to the EU Summit of Heads of State and Government on December 14th-15th, 2006."
