DIYARBAKIR - United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) representative Edmond Mc Loughney has said that their campaign targeted to equalize rates of girls and boys in education.
Mc Loughney came to southeastern province of Diyarbakir on Thursday to receive information about several campaigns launched in cooperation between the UNICEF and the Ministry of National Education.
Responding questions of journalists following the briefing at Diyarbakir Governor's Office, Mc Loughney highlighted importance of the campaign encouraging families to send their daughters to school, noting that they targeted to equalize rates of girls and boys in education.
Referring to efforts for rehabilitation of children working in the streets, Mc Loughney told reporters that they had extended full support to these efforts, and added that they had launched a new initiative to provide these children with an atmosphere of education.
Meanwhile, Provincial Director Sevket Yuce for Education said that nearly 24 thousand girls had been enrolled in schools under the campaign.
''In the education year of 2003-2004, 1 thousand 935 girls were enrolled in schools for the first time. 137 thousand 265 girls were enrolled in primary schools and 19 thousand 829 girls were enrolled in secondary schools reaching 24 thousand in the aggregate,'' he added.
