Sikorsky to Deliver 17 Seahawk Helicopters to Türkiye Starting in 2009

Sikorsky Aircraft has finalized a contract with Türkiye's Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM) to supply 17 S-70B Seahawk naval helicopters to the Turkish Naval Forces Command, the company announced in November 2006.

The deal's value was not disclosed officially, though industry sources estimated the helicopters could cost upward of $500 million. First deliveries are expected to begin in 2009.

The 17 new aircraft will join seven Seahawks already in service with the Turkish Navy, bringing Türkiye's total fleet of the type to 24. SSM Undersecretary Murad Bayar noted that Sikorsky has committed to a 50 percent offset obligation under the agreement, directing jobs and advanced technology toward Turkish industry.

The S-70B is equipped with dipping sonar, multi-mode radar, forward-looking infrared sensors, electronic surveillance systems, and survivability equipment, and can carry Penguin and Hellfire missiles. The aircraft is also capable of search-and-rescue, medical evacuation, surveillance, and utility missions.
