Türkiye and Bulgaria Near Agreement on Thrace Flood-Control Dam

Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Hilmi Güler wrapped up a series of meetings in Sofia in November 2006, holding talks with Bulgarian Economy and Energy Minister Roumen Ovcharov, parliamentary energy committee chair Ramadan Atalay, and Environment and Waters Minister Djecdet Chakurov.

A central topic was the Suakacagi dam, planned for the Tunca River as a key measure against flooding in Thrace. Güler said the project had entered its final stage, with technical experts from both countries scheduled to convene in Sofia within 15 days to work out remaining details.

The two sides also discussed an early warning system covering the Tunca, Meric, and Arda rivers. Güler noted the system would provide up to 15 or 16 hours of advance notice before a flood, giving authorities adequate time to respond.

Energy cooperation was also on the agenda. Bulgarian officials expressed interest in drawing on Türkiye's experience with natural gas pipeline construction, and Güler pledged technical assistance to Bulgarian specialists. He departed Sofia for Istanbul following the conclusion of his schedule.
