Spanish Deputy Defense Minister Visits Macka Mayor

TRABZON - Spanish Deputy Defense Minister Javier Jimenez Ugarte visited on Tuesday Macka Mayor Omer Yildiz.
Ugarte said that he came to Macka town of northeastern Trabzon province to thank for efforts of Turkey after a Ukrainian plane carrying Spanish soldiers crashed into a field near this town in May 2003 and said that they wanted to build a monument near Sahinkaya hamlet where the accident had happened.
Yildiz said that they thought of placing a statue on the center of the town which showed Turkish soldiers carrying Spanish soldiers and noted that there would be Turkish and Spanish flags on both sides of the statue.
In case the project was accepted by Spanish officials, they could send a sample of the statue to the Spanish Embassy in Ankara, Yildiz stated.
Ugarte thanked Yildiz for their efforts and said that they planned to open the monument in Macka with relatives of soldiers who died in the plane crash on May 26, 2004.
Spanish Deputy Defense Minister Ugarte then decorated Yildiz with medal of merit.
