BAGHDAD - A jeep exploded Wednesday on a bridge across the Tigris in central Baghdad that leads to the defence ministry and the heavily fortified Green Zone, as violence continued around the city.
Two people were killed inside the SUV, which security ministry officials said was a government-issue vehicle with registration plates. The dead were not immediately identified.
An interior ministry official said a bomb appeared to have been placed inside the car, while the defence ministry said the blast could have been a roadside booby-trap.
If confirmed, this would mark a particularly brazen attack in a heavily patrolled area just yards (metres) from key security facilities and the wall protecting the Iraq government and the US emnbassy.
