Turkey To Officially Ratify Sixth Protocol Concerning Abolition Of Death Penalty

STRASBOURG - Turkey will officially ratify the sixth protocol to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms concerning the abolition of death penalty on November 12.
Turkey's Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe (COE) Numan Hazar will present the documents showing that Turkey has ratified the sixth protocol to COE Secretary General Walter Schwimmer on Wednesday.
Hazar had signed the sixth protocol on behalf of Turkey in a ceremony on January 15, 2003.
The parliament had ratified the protocol in August.
Turkey is among the countries which has not signed the 13th protocol to the European Convention for Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms concerning the abolition of death penalty in all circumstances as well as Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
COE, which attributes great importance to purifying Europe from death sentence, is exerting intensive initiatives to abolish death sentence in the United States and Japan, which are participating in COE activities as observers.
