MADRID - "Turkey's accession into the European Union (EU) is a strategic obligation," said Alberto Navarro, Spanish Secretary in charge of EU relations, today.
In an exclusive interview with the A.A, Navarro told that Spain strongly supports Turkey's EU membership.
"Turkey's EU membership must take place. Turkey's accession into the EU is important for Europe, Turkey and the Mediterranean," noted Navarro before meeting Turkish State Minister and Chief Negotiator Ali Babacan on Wednesday.
Navarro expressed that Spain wants to develop ties with Turkey in the fields of tourism, banking and privatization.
Meanwhile, Babacan met Spanish Economy and Finance Minister Pedro Solbes today. Babacan-Solbes meeting lasted almost an hour.
"Solbes praised the Turkish economy. We discussed Turkey's relations with the EU," underlined Babacan.
