ANKARA - Security forces have intervened in a demonstration held in Ankara`s Kizilay Square to protest the Higher Education Board (YOK), by throwing tear-gas and spraying the demonstrators with water.
A number of university students gathered in Kizilay Square on Thursday to hold a demonstration to protest the YOK on the 22nd anniversary of its foundation.
The students carrying placards in their hands, chanted slogans against the YOK.
Security forces asked the demonstrators to disperse peacefully.
However, students responded the warning by chanting more slogans.
Security forces first threw tear-gas bombs.
In response, students broke paving stones into pieces, and threw them on security forces.
After security forces began spraying the demonstrators with water, a serious clash erupted between security forces and students.
Demonstrators responded security forces` intervention with tear-gas, water and club, by throwing stones.
While some students managed to flee from the area, security forces detained scores of them.
A number of security forces and demonstrators were injured during the clash.
Meanwhile, journalists, passersby and security officials themselves were also affected from the tear-gas.
POLICE DETAIN 10 PERSONS
Police detained on Thursday 10 persons in demonstrations to protest the Higher Education Board (YOK) in Kizilay.
Officials told the A.A correspondent that 10 policemen, 30 demonstrators and a reporter were injured during the clash between police and demonstrators.
