LEFKOSA - President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on Tuesday that they acted bravely in defense of the country, but that they did not block ways of compromise. He said those who recognize Greek Cypriot administration as legal Cyprus government were those who block ways of compromise.
Denktas said U.N. Security Council, with a decision taken on March 4, 1964, decided for insolubility of Cyprus question without being aware of it.
Denktas said efforts of Greek Cypriots to possess the whole island, to make Turkish Cypriots a minority and remove Turkey's guarantee continued behind this decision, stressing that European Union (EU) was the last step of this, and Annan Plan was its means.
Denktas said they continued to defend the national cause, adding that it was injustice not to recognize people that announced their republic. Denktas said they suffered for 11 years, they were treated unjustly, buried in mass graves, but that they did not bow and founded their state in the end.
Denktas said the state was 20 years old, and that time came for recognition of TRNC, adding that they expected friendly countries to recognize TRNC.
Denktas said recognition of TRNC would help solution of Cyprus question, adding that Greek Cypriots would understand that they could not get whole Cyprus.
Denktas said they knew Turkey's support, and that they opposed turning Cyprus into a Greek dagger targeting Turkey.
Denktas said they were ready to go to world arena as one Cyprus having two states, adding that they would not bow to injustice that has been continuing for 40 years.
Denktas said those, who thought that they could reach their goals by bringing Greek Cypriots to the EU under the name of Cyprus, now that realized this was impossible. Denktas said they had a rightful case.
Denktas said Greek Cypriots, since 1955, wrote, ''dogs and Turks can not enter stadiums'', stressing that their sports competitions with the foreign world were still prevented despite their rights in the constitution.
