LEFKOSA - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas said on Monday that two separate states were formed in Cyprus with the division of two old partners and a formula could not be found to unite them, adding that constituting a single Cyprus formed by two states was the only valid formula.
Denktas noted that it would be a kind of confederation. He said that formulas which would be found by violating international agreements and with an illegal approach would not bring peace and consensus. He added, ''it can please some people temporarily, but it will bring disaster again in a very short time as it happened in Israeli-Palestinian issue. Thus, it is necessary to approach this issue in cold-blood and by considering realities.''
Denktas emphasized that Annan Plan swept away whatever Turkish side and Turkey had gained with international agreements and thus, its philosophy was wrong and it could not be acceptable.
Underlining that the application of Greek Cypriots to the European Union (EU) was against international laws and was illegal, Denktas said, ''if EU is really a society that complies with supremacy of law, it should accept the necessity of ending illegal attitudes that have been carried out in Cyprus for 40 years and should act by having a new point of view towards Cyprus and understanding what Cyprus issue is. If they do this, they will also see that the demand of Turkish side is valid and it is the only way for peace and consensus.''
Noting that EU accepted illegal attitude and acted together with Greeks and Greek Cypriots, Denktas said, ''we are against act of possessing partnership republic by destroying it which was formed with international agreements. EU has accepted and supported this illegal attitude and violation of international agreement and thus, it acts together with Greece and Greek Cypriots which try to seize the rights of two sides that were among five signatories that had signed 1960 agreements.''
Noting that they did not expect this from EU and the United States and Britain which put pressure on Greek Cypriot side, Denktas said that the way to change international agreements was to amend them with new signatures. He added that Greek Cypriot side had tried to destroy inner balances of Guarantee Agreement, but could not succeed due to resistance of Turkish Cypriots for 11 years and a formation depending on two bases was created with the agreements they had signed.
Denktas also touched on the decision which was taken in the meeting of mayors of Mediterranean countries.
Denktas said that the mayor who had attended the meeting from Lefkosa had signed an unbelievable decision together with Greek Cypriots and according to this decision, Cyprus issue would be solved in accordance with EU norms and resolution of Security Council and Denktas himself was marked as the man who prevented peace in Cyprus.
Noting that they were astonished with this attitude of a Turkish Cypriot representative within the direction of wishes of Greek Cypriots, Denktas said that the decision was later changed and eliminated from harmful items by Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal and his staff during Socialist International and a reasonable decision was taken.
Denktas wanted people to know to where EU norms would carry the country and said that according to this, borders and separation would be lifted and solving the issue would be brought onto agenda on the basis of a single people like in Annan Plan.
