Black Sea Countries Commissioners Meeting Held

ANKARA - During the Black Sea Countries Commissioners meeting which was held in Istanbul, various assessments were made about prevention of pollution in the Black Sea.
Issuing a written statement on Friday, Environment and Forestry Ministry said that the Black Sea Commissioners meeting was held in Istanbul between 27-29 October within the scope of October 31, Black Sea Day.
Environment and Forestry Ministry Undersecretary Prof. Dr. Zuhuri Sarıkaya represented Turkey in the meeting. The budget of Black Sea Commission Secretariat for the year 2003-2004 and work programme were determined during the meeting.
The Black Sea Intervention Plan aiming to prevent pollution that could be caused by oil and other hazardous substances as a result of increasing tanker traffic in the Black Sea also came to agenda during the meeting.
The plan which was signed by Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania will be signed later by Russia, Ukraine and Georgia when the three countries complete their internal procedures.
The plan's first part on ''Intervention Against Oil Pollution'' has been completed and the second part on ''Intervention on Other Hazardous Substances'' will be completed until 2006.
