NAPLES - Justice Minister Cemil Cicek said on Friday that Higher Education Board (YOK) should be restructured.
Cicek, who is in Naples, Italy to attend the European Conference on Policies for the Protection of Children, told A.A correspondent that it was not possible to raise quality with the current YOK system.
Justice Minister Cicek said that making radical reforms regarding universities in Turkey was inevitable.
Cicek noted that what should be done in Turkey regarding higher education was to prepare a YOK law in line with expectations of public opinion and in line with modern understanding and science.
Stating that there was social demand for restructuring of YOK, Cicek said that the government was in an effort to meet that demand.
Cicek said that National Education Minister, Interuniversity Board Chairman and rectors of some universities met last week to overcome deficiencies and correct mistakes in the system.
What was important was to find a radical solution to the university problem in Turkey by a compromise, under light of scientific data and taking into consideration practices in Europe and the world, Cicek pointed out.
Noting that it did not seem possible to raise quality of university with the current YOK model, Cicek said that they had to find a solution without causing any ideological discussions and it was the approach of the government.
