ANKARA - Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan received on Friday Citigroup International Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Deryck Maughan.
Sources quoted Maughan as saying in his meeting with Erdogan that Turkey deserved to join European Union (EU) thanks to both its economic and democratic progress.
Maughan expressed pleasure with Turkey's economic course and said that they were following Turkey's EU accession process.
EU should not put forth any pretext or excuse before Turkey's membership process, Maughan said.
Erdogan told about Turkey's increasing esteem in foreign countries during the meeting.
Finance Minister Kemal Unakitan, Erdogan's foreign affairs adviser Egemen Bagis, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Global Corporate and Investment Banking Group Robert Druskin and Citibank N.A. Turkey Director General Mark Robinson were also in attendance at the meeting.
